A new liquid transportation fuel from sugar, DMF has energy characteristics similar to gasoline.

2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), a liquid transportation fuel with 40 percent greater energy density than ethanol, is being investigated as yet another alternative to petroleum fuel. In the June 21 issue of the journal Nature, University of Wisconsin-Madison chemical and biological engineering Professor James Dumesic describes a process for turning biomass-derived sugar into DMF.

Currently, ethanol is the only renewable liquid fuel produced on a large scale," says Dumesic. "But ethanol suffers from several limitations. It has relatively low energy density, evaporates readily, and can become contaminated by absorption of water from the atmosphere. It also requires an energy-intensive distillation process to separate the fuel from water."

According to Dumesic, DMF is not soluble in water and therefore cannot become contaminated by absorbing water from the atmosphere. DMF is stable in storage and, in the evaporation stage of its production, consumes one-third of the energy required to evaporate a solution of ethanol produced by fermentation for biofuel applications.

More research is required before the technology can be commercialized.

There are over 7.5 million flexible fuel ethanol vehicles on the road today. These vehicles are specially designed to run on regular unleaded or any ethanol blended fuel up to 85% ethanol. Special on-board diagnostics "read" the fuel blend, enabling drivers to fuel with E85 or regular unleaded when E85 is unavailable.

Because E85 sells on average for 10 to 20 percent below unleaded regular gasoline, many motorists trying to save money are filling their non flex-fuel vehicles with E85. E85 can be corrosive to fuel systems not designed to burn E85 and should never be used in these vehicles.

BioDiesel

Japanese automaker Nissan plans to introduce a diesel version of the Maxima in the U.S. by 2010.

Biodiesel fuel comes in blends up to B100. Biofuel blends contain biofuels made from soy oil, waste vegetable oil, rapeseed oil and many different plant oils and petroleum diesel. Most common retail fuel blends found in Dr. Engergee's Guide to Alternative Fuels are in B2, B5 or B20 blends.

Any diesel engine can burn biodiesel. Most OEM manufacturers approve of B5 use but are working toward approving B20. Higher concentrations of biofuel blends may require fuel system modifications. Contact your local dealer if you are unsure of which fuels blends can be used with your diesel powered vehicle.
