We have a very simple solution for solving pain-at-the-pump: Made in America!
Over 30 years ago my partner Keith Sanderson and I worked in the mining business as publicity managers pursuing the use of U.S. energy resources as a means of securing jobs for Americans. Then as now we were blessed with ample resources in coal, shale and oil. Then as now we needed to sustain and grow our standard of living.
But something happened during last 30 years: Nothing.

We heard through the Ford/Carter/Reagan/Bush/Clinton years that we were going to solve the problem and achieve energy independence. We obviously lacked the political will to get it done, and in truth, if we examined our own habits more closely, we Americans also lacked the will and individual leadership to make it happen.

So what do we do now?
The solutions then are the same now. We need to take advantage of any and all technologies and resources that will increase our energy independence. We cannot single out one resource, pushing one over the others in the hope one will be energy panacea…every resource has a strong lobby counterproductive to unifying us.

As long as we have the resources here at home to better our lives and those of our children, let’s use them all and DO SOMETHING about it now....

Let’s drill, drill, drill in Alaska, the Outer Continental Shelf, and tap the oil shale deposits of the West.
Let’s Boon Pickens our way to windmill electric power generation and retrofit SUVs to burn compressed natural gas.
Let’s add solar panels to our roofs and our cars.
Let’s give farmers even more incentive to plant extra acreage of corn and to grow new sugarcane fields for ethanol while we feed the world.
Let’s derive ways to convert cellulosic sources of corn stover, tall grass, miscanthus, poplar trees to ethanol fuel as well.
Let’s convert municipal waste, old tires to ethanol using microbes.
Let’s grow algae farms, plant more soybeans, peanuts, even palm trees for their oil… and convert french fry grease to create biodiesel.
Let’s harvest cow chips to fuel power generation.
Let’s mine coal, steam it for electric power and liquefy it for gasoline and jet fuel.
Let’s adapt clean coal technology to our new generation of coal-fired power plants and sequester CO2.
Let’s build 40 more nuclear power stations in this country so we can keep up with the Chinese and match the French.
Let’s use the hot air in Washington to raise a few balloons for energy independence.

WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR? IT’S ALL GOOD! LET’S DO IT RESPONSIBLY.

Let’s tell OPEC, Ahmadinejad, and Hugo Chavez that they are not going to get another dime of that $800 billion we’re sending to them each year.

In fact, let’s tell them all to “To Take Their Oil and Shove It!” We have plenty of resources here at home to power our energy needs for hundreds of years. It takes our collective will.
