There are over 7.5 million flexible fuel ethanol vehicles on the road today. These vehicles are specially designed to run on regular unleaded or any ethanol blended fuel up to 85% ethanol. Special on-board diagnostics "read" the fuel blend, enabling drivers to fuel with E85 or regular unleaded when E85 is unavailable.

Because E85 sells on average for 10 to 20 percent below unleaded regular gasoline, many motorists trying to save money are filling their non flex-fuel vehicles with E85. E85 can be corrosive to fuel systems not designed to burn E85 and should never be used in these vehicles.
